Turkey’s focus on crushing Kurdish separatists complicates fight against ISIS

Turkey may be engaging with the U.S. and NATO in the fight against ISIS in order to fulfil Erdogan’s ulterior motives, a New York Times piece states. Turkey has quickly expand its war on terror in the region to include Kurdish separatists, and that may have to do with Turkish elections. Erdogan recently lost out on his chance to establish an executive presidency, largely due to the success of a pro-Kurdish coalition in Turkey’s parliamentary elections. Analysts say Erdogan wants to target Kurdish militants in order to punish the Kurds, recapture the Turkish nationalist vote and set up snap elections in which he could establish the executive presidency.
