Russia, jailer of local separatists, welcomes foreign secessionists

Russia, which throws its own citizens in jail for up to five years for advocating secession, hosted a Kremlin-sponsored conference of worldwide separatist organizations on Sunday, the New York Times reports. Moscow hopes groups, like the Texas Nationalist Movement and the Republican Sinn Fein (Irish), will return home and lobby for the removal of Russian sanctions. However, the marginal groups in attendance have little influence on western foreign policy. No Russian secessionist organizations were invited, and from Syria, only supporters of Assad were in attendance.
