Islamic State may threaten Russia’s Caucasus

A BBC piece suggests the threat posed by the Islamic State to Russia’s North Caucasus is growing. IS has proclaimed the establishment of a wilayaat, or province, in the North Caucasus, and an anonymous audio message recently pledged allegiance to IS on behalf of militants in four of the area’s regions. Some analysts say IS plans to use the North Caucasus as a location to launch terror attacks in Russia, thus demonstrating the Islamist group’s expanded reach.
