Letter from Sofia

As part of Carnegie’s “Capitals Series,” Daniel Smilov, of the Center for Liberal Strategies and Sofia University, writes that Bulgaria’s center-right government is pursuing an ambitious, pro-EU agenda, which includes pivoting away from Russian energy projects and assisting NATO in its efforts to strengthen its eastern flank. However, there is risk that Bulgarians will lose faith in further European integration if the government fails to deliver on its energy promises, and if Bulgaria’s left can succeed in playing up the population’s pro-Russian sentiments.
