Poroshenko appoints ex-Georgia leader Saakashvili governor

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has appointed former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili as governor of Ukraine’s Odesa region, AFP reports. Saakashvili led Georgia through its five-day war with Russia in 2008 over the breakaway Georgian region South Ossetia. Saakashvili, who is fiercely pro-western, had been serving as an advisor to Poroshenko and was just granted Ukrainian citizenship.
