As Russia rolls in World Cup, Chechen cheers are muted

Despite Chechen strongman Ramzan Kadyrov’s undying loyalty to Putin, and despite Putin receiving more than 90 percent of the vote in Chechnya, many fans in Chechnya are rooting against Russia in the World Cup, according to an RFE/RL feature. Chechens used to be enthusiastic supporters of Soviet teams, but the  wars of the 1990s and early 2000s are still fresh in people’s minds in Chechnya, and many Chechens feel like second-class citizens in Russia, the article states.
