Turkey ends ‘Euphrates Shield’ military operation in Syria, PM says

Turkish PM Binali Yildirim announced Ankara has ended its months-long Euphrates Shield military campaign in Syria. However, Yildirim suggested there may be more Turkish military operations in Syria, saying, “Any operation following this one will have a different name,” the Independent reports. The Euphrates Shield operation, which began last August, was focused on pushing Islamic State fighters out of the Syrian region near Turkey’s border, as well as halting Kurdish YPG expansion in the area. Ankara fears the possibility of the Syrian Kurds carving out an autonomous region like the existing one in Iraq. Despite the announced conclusion of Euphrates Shield, Turkish troops remain stationed in Northern Syria.
