Kadyrov’s collective punishment, public shamings anger Chechens

An RFE/RL piece explains, in Ramzan Kadyrov’s Chechnya, people who criticize Kadyrov or his overlord Putin are lucky to get off with public shaming. Abductions are common, and some members of civil society are killed. Kadyrov also carries out collective punishment. After Kadyrov ordered the torching of homes belonging to relatives of militants, Putin excused it as an “understandable” response. Last month, Chechens abroad staged protests against Kadyrov in Europe. Kadyrov vowed he would find the protesters’ families in Chechnya.
