Many dead in Turkish city as MPs’ march blocked

At least 30 people have died in the southeastern Turkish city Cizre since military operations began there last week, the BBC reports. Turkey’s interior ministry claims most of the dead were Kurdish militants, but the pro-Kurdish HDP says 20 civilians were killed in the fighting. On Thursday, HDP leaders tried to enter Cizre by foot in order to draw attention to the violence, but they were stopped by Turkish police. The military recently imposed a curfew on Cizre, and locals says the city has since been under siege.
