Moldovans take to streets to protest ‘mafia’ government

Tens of thousands of protesters gathered in the Moldovan capital Chisinau Sunday, demanding the resignation of President Nicolae Timofti and the punishment of those responsible for mass embezzlement, The Guardian reports. About $1 billion went missing from three Moldovan banks in May, causing the IMF and World Bank to stop lending to Moldova. A new pro-EU government has since taken over in Chisinau, but little reform has occurred and Russia still has influence in Moldova. Demonstrators on Sunday were waving Moldovan, Romanian and EU flags while chanting “Resign” and “Down with the mafia!”
