Turkey accused of tipping Al-Qaeda-linked group that captured US-trained Syrian rebels

McClatchy cites Syrian rebel sources in reporting that Turkish intelligence tipped off the Nusra Front, an Al-Qaeda linked group, about the whereabouts of US-trained Syrian rebels who were returning to Syria from Turkey. Nusra captured many of the 54 graduates of the US training program as they entered Syria on July 29. Washington spent $500 million on the program, which was supposed to enhance the US-led fight against the Islamic State. Turkey has close ties with multiple Islamist groups in Syria, and Turkish officials reportedly worried the US-trained rebels would attack Islamists who are allied with Ankara.
