Russia jails Ukraine filmmaker in ‘Stalinist’ trial

Russia sentenced a Ukrainian filmmaker to 20 years in jail at the conclusion of a trial that broke international law, according the EU. A second Ukrainian activist was also sentenced to 10 years in jail, EU Observer reports. Both the filmmaker, Oleg Sentsov, and the activist, Oleksandr Kolchenko, were detained by Russian forces in Crimea in May 2014, while they were organizing anti-Russian protests. Multiple witnesses in the trial were tortured into making confessions, according to both Russian NGO Memorial and Amnesty International.
