The failure of the political elite in the Balkans

Verica Spasovska, of Deutsche Welle, discusses why almost half of Germany’s asylum applications come from the Western Balkans. Spasovska faults the political elite in the Balkans for corruption and patronage, which is slowing economic growth and forcing people to become official party members in order to improve their careers. But, Spasovska also faults the EU, which has delivered billions of euros in reconstruction aid to non-EU states without holding them accountable for how they spend the money.
