Russia makes renewed bid for contentious Arctic regions

Russia is trying to get the United Nations to recognize 463,000 square miles of the Arctic shelf as Russian territory. Russia says scientific data backs its claim. The other countries that border the Arctic — Norway, Denmark, Canada and the U.S. — disagree. The Arctic is believed to hold as much as 25 percent of the world’s undiscovered oil and gas.
