‘Putin’s banker’ now lives in fear of man he put into power

The Guardian interviews a former Russian billionaire, who has been stripped of his wealth and is now living life on the run. Sergei Pugachev was a close associate of Putin, who co-ran his election campaign and would have nightly meetings with the president that lasted until 3 or 4 a.m. Pugachev said Putin has become the richest person in the world and will remain so until he leaves power because he considers all assets in Russia to be his — including Gazprom, Rosneft and private companies. Pugachev also said Putin plans to stay in office for life.
