UN warns Turkey against calling buffer a ‘safe zone’

The UN is warning Turkey about its planned “safe zone” in Northern Syria, Reuters reports. Turkey is now partnering with the U.S. to drive Islamic State militants out of the area. Erdogan claims Turkey’s military intervention in Syria will allow 1.7 million Syrian refugees to leave Turkey and return to their homes. Yet, the U.S. says its aim is not to create a civilian safe zone, and the UN says Turkey should not refer to the area as such unless it can guarantee the protection of civilians.
