Massive purge in Turkish police set stage for terrorist attacks

A Zaman piece argues Erdogan and the AKP are largely to blame for this week’s IS terror attack that killed 32 people in Turkey. Documents show the Turkish government has turned a blind eye to IS cells in Turkey while actively assisting IS activities in Syria. Additionally, Erdogan ordered a reshuffling of the National Police Department (EGM) after two corruption probes implicated high-ranking AKP officials. Erdogan’s purge led to unqualified staff taking leading roles in the organization, including in intelligence and counterterrorism units.
