Turkey plans to invade Syria to stop the Kurds, not ISIS

Erdogan is calling for the Turkish military to invade Northern Syria and set up a buffer zone along the Syrian border, even though his own generals appear opposed to the idea, the Daily Beast reports. Erdogan has vowed that he would not let Syrian Kurds form their own state along the Turkish border, and the purpose of the military intervention would likely be to stop the Kurdish PYD from taking complete control of Syrian territory near the border. Kurdish forces have been making gains against ISIS recently, in part due to airstrikes carried out by the U.S.-led coalition.
