Tug of War in Macedonia: Will Skopje’s wiretap scandal drive it closer to Russia?

The U.S. Council on Foreign Relations publication Foreign Affairs runs a piece saying the West needs to integrate Macedonia, as well as the Western Balkans as a whole, into the Euro-Antlatic community. If the U.S. and EU mishandle the Macedonian political crisis, ethnic unrest could ensue between the country’s Macedonian population and its ethnic Albanian minority, which is impatiently awaiting EU accession. Another violent ethnic conflict would give Russia the opportunity to swoop in and extend its influence in the Balkans, U.S.-based professor Besir Ceka argues.
