In Chechnya, human rights groups’ offices are vandalized

Vandals attacked the Chechen office of Russian NGO Committee Against Torture (KPP) on Wednesday. A small crowd standing outside cheered and applauded as the mob smashed windows and destroyed computers and records. KPP, whose offices were firebombed in December, was featured in a documentary released last week by Mikhail Khodorkovsky’s Open Russia group. The documentary showed human rights abuses that are going on in Chechnya under the rule of Ramzan Kadyrov, who has a close relationship with Putin. KPP employees said police did not respond to the attack Wednesday. They also suggested the attack was officially sanctioned by Kadyrov’s government, the New York Times reports.
