The voxukraine.org website publishes an interesting speech by former US ambassador to Kiev, John Herbst. Herbst argues that the choice of Ukraine is not as usually assumed between the West and Russia, but between the future and reaction. This is the case because the system of governance Putin has built inevitably leads to repression, economic collapse and poverty. Russia, he says has produced a large number of the best mathematicians in the world, yet does not have a single great software company. Why? Because there are a large number of police and KGB thugs that are waiting to take it away from the entrepreneurs once it becomes profitable.
