French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel have joined Poroshenko in urging Putin not to recognize the separatist elections being held in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions of Ukraine on Sunday. The elections are said to contradict the September Minsk agreement, but Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said earlier this week that “of course” Moscow would recognize the election results.
