Turkey and U.S. plan to create Syria ‘safe zone’ free of ISIS

The U.S. and Turkey have agreed to a military plan that calls for setting up a “safe zone” in Northern Syria, which would be controlled by moderate Syrian rebels, the New York Times reports. Details about the plan are unclear. Following a deadly ISIS bombing last week in Northern Turkey, the Turkish military has been conducting air strikes on IS. But, Turkey has also been using the opportunity to attack Kurdish militants who, as well, are battling IS. The “safe zone” is likely to encroach on the gains made by the Kurdish militants. It also may bring U.S. and allied planes in close proximity to Syrian fighter jets. Ankara has the stated goal of overthrowing the Assad regime in Syria, but Washington is focused on fighting ISIS.
