Parties scramble for candidates in Romania

Romania has an unprecedented number of politicians running for office who have been indicted or even convicted of corruption charges, but that is not necessarily an obstacle to getting elected, a bne IntelliNews pice explains. Even former PM Victor Ponta, who is currently being tried on 17 counts of forgery, money-laundering and complicity in tax evasion, is trying to make a comeback to high-level office in Romania. In 2015, Romania’s highly active anti-corruption agency indicted then-PM Ponta, as well as five ministers and 21 MPs.
