Kremlin-backed prosecutor in Crimea seeks closure of Tatar Mejlis

Moscow’s prosecutor in Russian-occupied Crimea has filed a request to ban the Crimean Tatars’ self-governing body, the Mejlis, RFE/RL reports. Natalya Poklonskaya is trying to brand the Mejlis an “extremist organization.” The Tatar community has overwhelmingly opposed Russia’s annexation of Crimea. Since the annexation, Tatars have been regularly harassed and even kidnapped.
