The clash of narratives between the West and Russia

Carnegie’s Judy Dempsey criticizes German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier for trying to appease Russia. Steinmeier gave a speech at the OSCE meeting last week in which he said renewing dialogue and rebuilding trust are priorities for 2016. Steinmeir also referred to a recent panel on West-Russia relations. Yet, the panel’s final reports offered two narratives — a western and a Russian view of post-Cold War relations — which are totally incompatible. If the West is going to capitulate to the Kremlin narrative, than it is going to sacrifice the security and territorial integrity of Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine, Dempsey writes.
