Russia has begun carrying out air strikes in Syria against groups fighting the forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, BBC reports. It is so far unclear whom Russia has targeted with the attacks. The Kremlin claims it was targeting the Islamic State, but Washington is saying the Russian air strikes did not appear to hit IS-controlled territory.
