Top NATO general: Russians starting to build air defense bubble over Syria

The Washington Post runs a piece on top NATO commander Gen. Phillip Breedlove’s remarks at the German Marshall Fund on Monday. Breedlove said he is concerned about Russia creating an anti-access/area denial (A2/AD) bubble around Syria. An A2/AD is a combination of systems, like surface-to-air missile batteries and anti-missile ships, which are deployed to stop forces from entering a certain area by land, air or sea. If Russia introduces an A2/AD bubble in Syria, it would be Russia’s third such system in and near Europe. The other two are in Kaliningrad, Russia’s Baltic exclave, and Crimea. Breedlove said it would hinder U.S. and coalition operations in the region, and Russia’s intention is to prop up the Assad regime, not to fight the Islamic State.
