America’s dangerous bargain with Turkey

Former U.S. ambassador to Turkey, Eric S. Edelman, slams the Obama Administration’s deal with Erdogan over the fight against ISIS. In a New York Times op-ed, Edelman writes the agreement that allows the U.S. to use a Turkish air base will prove to be a Faustian Bargain if Turkey does not call off its war with the Kurds. As part of Erdogan’s election strategy, Turkish forces have been attacking Kurds who have served as strong allies to the U.S. in the war against ISIS. Also, Turkey is continuing to support radical Sunni Islamist groups in Syria, which is leading to further destabilization of the region.
