Macedonia dead last in Europe on press freedom

RFE/RL covers the world press freedom report released by U.S.-based Freedom House that ranks Macedonia last among European countries. Macedonia is ranked 125th out of 199 countries. Former Soviet states Moldova, Ukraine and Belarus are in a separate Eurasian category. The Macedonian government is currently under fire for numerous abuse of power allegations that emerged from leaked wiretapped conversations. The government is accused of surveiling more than 100 journalists and attempting to dictate what some of them report, as well as committing several other acts to stifle critical media.
