EurActiv reports Serbia is complaining about EU sanctions on Russia, even though Belgrade did not join the sanctions regime. Serbia, a historic ally of Russia, says the sanctions regime is harming its EU accession process, while benefiting EU candidates Albania and Montenegro, which did adopt the sanctions. A Serbian government paper criticizing the sanctions was written by employees of Serbia’s largest energy company, NIS, which is majority owned by Russia’s Gazprom. Belgrade is also complaining about the sanctions impacting Serbian banks Sberbank Serbia and VTB Serbia, which are subsidiaries of Russian banks Sberbank and VTB.
