Ruling party endorsed Zurabishvili wins Georgian presidency

Bne IntelliNews covers the Georgian presidential runoff which resulted in the election of former foreign minister Salome Zurabishvili, who was backed by the ruling Georgian Dream party that is led by billionaire oligarch and former PM Bidzina Ivanishvili. Zurabishvili easily defeated the more pro-western candidate, Grigol Vashadze, of the United Opposition, which is led by exiled former president Mikheil Saakashvili’s centre-right United National Movement. Saakashvili reacted to the results by claiming there was “mass electoral fraud” and telling Georgians to hit the streets in protest. The article notes the Sea of Azov crisis could have impacted the vote by promoting Georgians wary of Russia and its military role in the breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia to vote for Zurabishvili, who is less likely to upset Moscow.
